Last Sunday, a police motorcyclist was killed after a
serious highway accident. The motorcyclist was taking part in President Barack
Obama’s motorcade in Florida.
Officer Bruce St. Laurent was hospitalized and critically
injured, but later died at the hospital. Obama was notified of the death, and
says his thoughts and prayers are with the officer’s family.
The accident was caused when a Ford 150 pickup hit the
officer’s motorcycle, near the forefront of the president’s motorcade. Obama
did not witness the accident, and no other vehicles were involved.
The authorities are investigating the crash as a vehicular
homicide, though no speculations can be made at this time. St. Laurent was a
veteran of Jupiter’s police department for 20 years, 18 of which as a motor
officer.
Wrongful death during
a motorcycle accident
While authorities are probing into the chance that the
accident could be a vehicular homicide, we may be looking at a potential case
of wrongful death. Vehicular homicide is a crime that generally involves death
resulting from the negligent operations of a vehicle.
If the offending driver in this accident is proven to have
caused a wrongful death due to negligence, the officer’s family could have a
potential claim on their hands.
Seeking help from
motorcycle accident attorneys
Motorcycle
accidents are one of the most leading causes of death in the United States.
Because of their size and speed, motorcycle riders are usually overlooked by
other auto drivers.
However, it can be argued that the late Officer St. Laurent
would have been difficult to miss if he was participating in President Obama's motorcycle procession.
If the accident is classified as a vehicular homicide, it can also be filed as
a wrongful death.
In a wrongful death claim, an attorney can speak on a
plaintiff’s behalf. Find out more about wrongful deaths, who they can affect,
